Zimbabwe's Kristy Conventry elected as IOC President
Kirsty Coventry has been elected as the first woman and first African president of the International Olympic Committee, succeeding Thomas Bach. She won with 49 out of 97 votes, earning the required 50% majority in the first round or voting, defeating candidates such as World Athletics President Sebastian Coe. A former Olympic swimming champion and Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Coventry has been an IOC member since 2013, and will assume her new office on June 24.
Sam Ruthe becomes youngest sub-4 miler
At just 15 years old, New Zealand's Sam Ruthe became the youngest athlete ever to break the four-minute mile barrier, running 3:58.35 at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium on March 19. The record for the youngest sub-4 miler previously belonged to Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who did so when he was 16 years old.
Barkley begins; Barkley ends
The 2025 Barkley Marathons has ended with no finishers, marking the 25th time in its 40-year history that no one completed the brutal five-loop course within the 60-hour limit. Only 10 runners finished the first loop on time. The race was made even more difficult this year following a record five finishers in 2024, with tougher navigation and overgrown trails leading to a high attrition rate. This result reinforces the Barkley Marathons' reputation as one of the toughest ultramarathons, with only 20 individuals ever completing it.
