Russia names new Olympics chief

Russia appointed Mikhail Degtyarev, the current Minister of Sport, as the new president of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). Degtyarev, who has been under international sanctions, succeeds Stanislav Pozdnyakov, who resigned in October 2024 amid geopolitical tensions and the ROC's suspension by the International Olympic Committee for violations of the Olympic Charter. Degtyarev's appointment comes as Russia seeks to navigate its athletes' participation in international sports events under neutral status due to ongoing sanctions and suspensions.
