Jane Hedengren named Gatorade Cross Country Player of the Year

Hedengren, a senior from Provo, Utah, earned the national honor following a sweep in Nike Cross Regionals and Nationals, setting a course record in each meet, and winning the national title by a staggering 41-seconds ahead of second place finisher Victoria Garces. The Gatorade Player of the Year honor is awarded at both the state and national level. Other standouts earning state honors were Sadie Engelhardt for California and Addison Ritzenhein for Colorado. The boys winners will be announced in February.

Sherika Jackson to open 2025 season with 60m in Kingston

Jackson, who had to miss the 2024 Paris Olympics due to injury, is set to open her 2025 season at the Queen’s / Grace Jackson Meet in Kingston, Jamaica. It will be her first return to the track since pulling up injured in a 200 meter contest in July of last year in Hungary. Also on the start list for the meet are Tobi Amusan, Zharnel Hughes, and Cejhae Green.

Tokyo 2025 official motto and logo announced

The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 has unveiled its official motto, "Every Second, SUGOI." The Japanese word for “amazing” is highlighted in all caps to represent a global expression of awe and inspiration. The visual identity features dynamic designs inspired by Tokyo's vibrant culture and the energy of athletics, and is made up of broad brush strokes in the forms of athletes competing at the highest level of sport. The World Championships in Tokyo will take place September 13 - 21.

Skechers opens an interactive retail store concept in Canada

The retail space at the West Edmonton Mall is a first-ever offering from the brand focusing on its Skechers Performance division. The primary offerings from the 7500 square foot storefront will be from their basketball and pickleball lines, but also have experiences for consumers seeking their golf, soccer, running, training, walking, trail and hiking products. It is the largest sales floor among Skechers concept stores worldwide.

Fred Newhouse, 1976 Olympic gold medalist, passes at age 76

Newhouse, who was known for his prowess in the 400 meters during the 1970s, passed away on Monday. A standout sprinter at Prairie View A&M University, he earned multiple NAIA national titles. Newhouse’s international success peaked at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where he won a silver medal in the 400 meters and a gold medal as part of the U.S. 4x400-meter relay team. His career is celebrated not only for his athletic achievements but also for his contributions as long-time and much respected USATF official.
