Beatrice Chebet becomes first women to run sub-14:00 5k

In a New Year’s Eve performance for the ages, Chebet ran a world record of 13:54 for a road 5k in Barcelona. The previous record of 14:13 was shared between herself and fellow Kenyan Agnes Ngetich. A fitting end to an incredible 2024 season for Chebet, in which she set the 10000m world record (28:54.14) and won gold at the Paris Olympics in both the 5000m and 10000m.

Diamond League increases prize money to athletes for the 2025 season

The Diamond League has announced a 33.7% increase in total prize money for the 2025 season, raising the amount to $9.24 million—the highest since the series began in 2010. This boost includes the introduction of "Diamond+" events, which will offer up to 67% more prize money per meet, with individual event purses ranging from $30,000 to $50,000 at regular series meetings and $60,000 to $100,000 at the Diamond League Final, the highest payouts reserved for Diamond+ designated events. The increase aims to reward athletes more generously while ensuring the series' long-term sustainability.

Allie Ostrander signs with Oiselle

Following two years with trail / outdoor focused NNormal, Ostrander announced that she has signed a professional contract with Oiselle. In posts to Instagram, she wrote, “Over the last two years [with NNormal], I’ve learned that I have a passion for the trails, but I think I love the track even more…With Oiselle, I’ll have the freedom to pursue my goals on the track, roads, trails, and cross country course,” in 2025 and beyond.

Georgia Bell and Jessica Hull added to Millrose Games lineup

The 2025 NYRR Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on February 8 will feature a highly anticipated rematch between Olympic silver medalist Jessica Hull of Australia and bronze medalist Georgia Bell of Great Britain. Joining them are World Indoor medalists Nikki Hiltz and Emily Mackay of the United States, promising a competitive field.

Sergey Makarov to take over as India federation’s javelin coach

Sergey Makarov, the Russian Olympic bronze medalist from the 2000 and 2004 Games, is set to take over as India's javelin coach. The Athletics Federation of India finalized Makarov's appointment following the departure of Klaus Bartonietz, who was at the helm for Neeraj Chopra’s rise on the global stage, overseeing his training to Olympic and World Championship titles.
