Liam Murphy sets NCAA 1500m record

Though the outdoor season is just getting started, the records have already begun to fall. Villanova’s Liam Murphy set a new 1500m NCAA record at the Raleigh Relays, running 3:33.02. The previous record of 3:33.74 was set by Eliud Kipsang in 2022. Murphy’s teammate Marco Langon and University of Virginia’s Gary Martin both also run under the previous record, finishing the race in second and third place, respectively.

World Athletics Extends Ban on Russia and Belarus

​As the IOC considers reinstating the Russian Federation, World Athletics has extended its ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes, preventing them from competing under their national flags or anthems. This suspension was initially imposed in 2022. The ban affects athletes, support personnel, and officials from both countries, excluding them from all World Athletics Series events for the foreseeable future.

Hedengren & Lutkenhaus named MileSplit’s Indoor Athletes of the Year

Jane Hedengren, a senior at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, has been named MileSplit's 2025 Girls Indoor Athlete of the Year. Throughout the indoor season, Hedengren set multiple national records, including a 4:26.14 mile and a 15:13.26 in the 5000 meters, the latter also establishing a new U20 American record. In his freshman season, Northwest High’s (Justin, Texas) Cooper Lutkenhaus is named the 2025 Boys Indoor Athlete of the Year. He became just the second freshman in history to go sub-1:50 for the 800m, in addition to setting a national freshman record of 1:47.58 in the event. He was undefeated in 800m competition on the season.

Villarreal commits to LSU

LSU has signed Micaela Villarreal, a standout high school runner from Texas, to its women's track and field and cross-country programs. Villarreal is a three-time individual state champion in cross country, securing the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools state title consecutively from 2022 to 2024. In track and field, she has earned four TAPPS state championships, including titles in the 800m and 3200m.

Marathon Relay to take place at theTRACK

The New Balance Marathon Relay is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 at theTRACK, corresponding with Boston Marathon weekend. This event invites teams of 10 to 26 runners to collectively complete a marathon distance of 211 laps on the 200-meter indoor track, with the flexibility to divide the laps among team members as they choose.
